Overview

‘Constructed Ecosystems’ takes a closer look at the devices used by Ken Yeang in his endeavors to take his theoretical work on ecoarchitecture into the real world of building. The fundamental, underlying premise is that if ecoarchitecture projects are to fully embrace the natural world they must be designed to be “living constructed ecosystems” and not inert denatured structures. Yeang holds that green design today is still very much in its adolescence, requiring significant developmental work, particularly in architectural biointegration and aesthetic development. By looking at the various invented devices that Yeang has adopted to technically advance abstract and theoretical ecoarchitecture through the use of concept architectural design, micro-devices, and building sub-systems, ‘Constructed Ecosystems’ seeks to achieve a better biointegration of human built environment with nature.

Authors

Ken Yeang is an architect and ecologist, best known for his signature ecoachitecture and ecomasterplans, that have a distinctive verdant hirsute aesthetic. He trained at the AA School (UK) and received a doctorate from Cambridge University. He is principal of Hamzah & Yeang with offices in Malaysia, the UK and China, delivering innovative ecological architecture and masterplans that go beyond conventional accreditation systems. He is the Distinguished Plym Professor at Illinois University and associate professor at several universities worldwide. He has authored several books on green architecture and received numerous awards for his ecoarchitecture including the Aga Khan Award, Prince Claus Award, Malaysian Institute of Architects Gold Medal, Malaysia’s Merdeka Award. The Guardian names him as, ‘..one of the 50 people who could save the planet.

Dr. Shireen Jahn Kassim is both an academic and a practicing specialist. She completed her doctorate at the University of Brighton. She is a senior Academician at the Faculty of Architecture and Environmental Design, International Islamic University Malaysia where she teaches and supervises PhD and Masters students on building technology, sustainable building, and energy-conscious design. An authority on computational simulations and green building standards, she has led companies and agencies to achieve their sustainability and low carbon emission targets. She is currently the lead advisor in coordinating the steering committees of the Malaysian Government’s Construction Industry Development Board CIDB) and Public Works Department (JKR) to develop and launch an integrated carbon-based sustainable building rating assessment system for Malaysia. She sits on the editorial and peer review board of Elsevier’s International Journal of the Sustainable Built Environment and is on the Scientific Committee for the International CONVR Conferences. She regularly advises and analyses Ken Yeang’s work on its analysis and simulations, and monitors data from post-occupancy studies as strategic input into his bioclimatic and ecological design work.
